Why July Is the Right Time to Rethink Your Energy Bills - Even in the Summer

Posted by Voltaware 1 July 2025

It might be one of the hottest weeks of the year, and heating costs are probably the last thing on your mind - but energy experts are urging households across the UK to take action now.

From 1 July, Ofgem’s price cap has dropped to £1,720 for a typical dual-fuel household - a welcome change from the previous £1,849. A further slight fall is forecast in October, down to £1,697. But don’t get too comfortable.

A Long-Term Rise is Coming

Ofgem has just approved £24 billion to upgrade the UK’s ageing energy infrastructure. That includes:

  • £15 billion for the gas network
  • £8.9 billion for the high-voltage electricity grid
This is aimed at improving energy security, integrating more renewables, and protecting consumers from future gas price spikes
  • But it comes at a cost: households are expected to pay £104 more per year by 2031 to help fund this investment. Some suppliers are already forecasting price rises before then - Octopus Energy, for example, predicts a jump to £1,758 in October.

So, Should You Fix Your Tariff?

Maybe. But the decision shouldn’t be based on guesswork.

The price cap reflects a typical home - not yours. Your actual usage may be much higher (or lower), depending on your appliances, habits, and how energy-efficient your home is.

With Voltaware’s smart energy monitor, you get:

    • A detailed breakdown of how much each appliance is costing you
    • Insights into unnecessary standby usage
    • A personalised energy profile to help you understand your usage - and make smarter tariff decisions.
    • In short, you get control.

      Don’t Wait for Winter

Taking five minutes to understand your energy use this summer could save you serious money later this year. Prices might drop short-term - but long-term, the trend is upwards.
